Colors for this page

A small basket holds upright maple leaves, with three more leaves spread below it. The repeated pointed shapes make this a compact study in autumn color variation.

  • Maple red
  • Amber
  • Basket tan

A suggested palette; it does not have to match the example exactly.

  1. Color the upright leaves red and amber in an alternating sequence.
  2. Fill the basket bands with tan, stopping at each woven edge.
  3. Repeat the two leaf colors on the three leaves below the basket.
A simpler way to color

Skip shading and use red for all leaves in the basket, amber for loose leaves, and tan for the basket.

Level of detail: The leaves are open shapes, but their pointed edges and basket weave need careful stops.

Talk about it: Which fallen leaf looks as if it landed most recently, and what color would you give it?
